Context

At the heart of modern art lies a question: how do you capture the essence of reality? Vincent van Gogh searched for it in fields, skies, and human emotion, translating feeling into bold color and movement. A generation later, Piet Mondrian pursued the same quest by reducing nature to its purest forms — lines, planes, and primary colors — in search of universal order.

This journey explores how their parallel visions shaped the course of modern art. In Amsterdam, visit the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum, where their works stand alongside other pioneers of modernity. In Amersfoort and Utrecht, step inside Mondrian’s birthplace and the Rietveld Schröder House, a De Stijl landmark. In The Hague, encounter the Mauritshuis’ Golden Age masterpieces and Mondrian’s unfinished Victory Boogie Woogie. Finally, in Otterlo, the Kröller-Müller Museum presents the world’s second-largest Van Gogh collection, set within the landscapes that inspired him.

Van Gogh & Mondrian: An Introduction

Together, these two Dutch masters show the arc of modern art — from personal expression to universal abstraction.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890)

Though he sold only a single painting in his lifetime, Van Gogh’s emotionally charged brushwork and vivid colors reshaped modern painting. From The Potato Eaters to Sunflowers and Starry Night, his work expressed inner turmoil and beauty with raw honesty. His letters to his brother Theo remain one of the most moving records of an artist’s struggle and vision.

Piet Mondrian (1872–1944)

Almost a generation later, Mondrian took Dutch art into the future. Starting with landscapes of windmills and trees, he evolved towards radical abstraction: bold black lines and blocks of primary colors that defined the De Stijl movement. His influence spread from fine art to architecture, design, and fashion, making him one of the true pioneers of 20th-century modernism.
